VH1 Hip Hop Honors Will Pay Tribute to the 90s Era And the Martin TV Show

Get your "Diddy bop" on, because we're goin' back to '99. Tonight the 2017 VH1 Hip Hop Honors will be broadcasting and the network is honoring the 90's with the theme "The 90's Game Changers". Last year, female emcees as rappers were honored at the award show with performances from pioneers like Lil' Kim, Remy Ma, Salt 'N Pepa, and many more ladies who have graced the mic. This year Mariah Carey, Martin Lawrence, Jermaine Dupri, Master P, and Hype Williams are the honorees. We reported last month that the Martin TV show just turned 25 years old as well as the impact the show had on hip hop and pop culture, so this milestone is right on point for the 90's theme of the show.

Watch VH1's clips detailing the impact these five figures have had on 90's hip hop culture:

Hopefully Mariah Carey gets her stuff together and doesn't give the crowd a struggle performance, because lately she's been lacking like crazy:

She was recently seen rehearsing for the show and Da Brat and Jermaine Dupri appear to be performing with her, so I hope she brings it. Anywho, I think the line up for the honorees is dope. Hype Williams is a creative genius and has single handedly transformed the visual aesthetic of hip hop music videos. No more rapping on the corner of Fulton Street, Hype Williams' visuals borrowed from the likes of Michael Jackson and amplified the artistry of hip hop artist. One of my favorite videos he's directed is Missy Elliott's 1999 song "She's A Bitch".

Timbaland on the production, Missy with her everlasting creativity and Hype Williams directing the video was hands down one of the most unique collaborations in this history of hip hop.

I've always felt like Jermaine Dupri is a highly slept on producer. His 1970's/1980's G-funk inspired and sampled production on Da Brat's 1994 debut album "Funkdafied" doesn't get the credit it deserves, nor does the album or Da Brat herself. Like Missy and Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, and even Da Brat, worked heavily with Mariah Carey throughout the 1990's and 2000's incorporating her r&b/pop sound with hip hop.

Songs like "Heartbreaker" featuring Jay-Z and "Fantasy" (Remix) with the late Ol' Dirty Bastard helped bridge the gap and set the stage for pop music's intermingling with hip hop and rap. This was a win-win for hip hop artists like Jay and pop/r&b artists like Mariah in which both wanted to "cross over" to one another's core fan bases. Although much of what is considered modern hip hop and pop music is watered down noise, you thank Mariah Carey and her many collaborations with hip hop artists for songs like Katy Perry's "California Gurls" featuring Snoop Dogg.

Although Master P did recently defended tap dancing, shoe shining sambo Kodak Wack (when he dissed Black women) in attempt to win stale brownie points with the younger generation, and because he was mentoring him at a point, his business ventures within the hip hop culture are commendable. His record company No Limits Records and collaborations with was staple for the rise of Southern rap and hip hop. By 1998, the company grossed $10 million dollars. That same year he made the Forbes list ranking in number 10 as one of the 40 highest paid entertainers. Master P invested in everything from real estate and jewelry lines to films like I Got The Hook-Up (1998) and of course the well known ICDC College.

So far, Missy Elliott is confirmed to perform and we'll update you guys on more artists who'll be performing. The VH1 Hip Hop Honors will be on September 18, 2017 9/8C
