DROCAST: #SurvivingRKelly Documentary Review

Happy 2019, y'all. It's been a hot minute since the last Drocast episode, but we're back in business. Last Thursday, Lifetime released the long-awaited 3-night docuseries Surviving R Kelly detailing the two decade long list of sexual abuse allegations and pedophilia against the Chicago singer. For many of us, like myself (especially growing up in Chicago) R Kelly's music has been apart of the soundtrack to our lives. However, many of us have been rocked to sleep by the self-proclaimed "Pied Piper" to the point we've turned a blind eye to the sexual violence against young Black girls.

Nobody cared because we were Black girls.

While many of us were aware of many of the allegations from the 1990's and 2000's, to see the victims and hear the stories from people who were around R Kelly was chilling and shocking. Get into the latest episode of TKS doc reviewing the three part series:

  1. I didn't watch it and have no desire to watch it. He will continue to make money and men like him will continue to be around. Also, women will always fall for that because some women have low self esteem, no good family structure, and naive.

  2. This whole thing is so sad to me. I haven't seen the show and don't want to. My daughter and everyone else on facebook has been filing me in. I feel like if this were white girls, the outcome would have been so different!

  4. I don't know that race plays a role. All these black men, women and parents knew and didn't take any action. We will have to watch and see if anything legal happens next.

  5. I watched every episode, and I have to say it was hard to sit through. That line about people not caring about the victims because they are black was dead on. I'm from the Southside of Chicago, and it's common knowledge he used to hang out around Kenwood looking for girls.

  6. I have not watched, but I know social media has been buzzing non-stop since episode one came on. I recall the talks back when he was with Aaliyah, but clearly it is far more than that. Sickening!

    1. We can walk and chew gum at the same time. Both issues are equally important: government problems which have existed long before Trump and the abuse of Black girls. I agree, it's very sad that some people will lose all integrity for money.
