Look of the Day: Renaissance Woman Realness

A true fashionista can take inspiration from any era and make it her own. And I do mean ANY era! As a lover and student of history, I regularly mix my love for the genre with my fashion (hence my overall vintage shop and style). This time I took a step out of the 20th century and dabbled into the 15th and 16th centuries.

This era was known as the Renaissance period which occurred after the Middle Ages which was a cultural and historic phenomenon that exploded in Europe where literatire, art, and politics were reborn. This era was primarily centered in modern day Italy where inspiration from ancient Rome was revisited and reproduced in the new era.

I purchased this omg...amazing puff sleeve blouse last summer at a Buffalo Exchange shop and instantly fell in love. It immediately reminded me of a Tudor era gown especially with the puff sleeves and pearls. With it's modern touch with the round belly cut out, it even reminded me of a costume that could have been a costume worn on the 1996 "Romeo & Juliet" movie adaptation which carried its own 90's touch on the Shakesperian drama.

I styled this blouse with a layered pearl and cameo choker and Blackamoor brooch. Both cameo and Blackamoor jeweleries were widely popular during the Renaissance. Like most of what was revitalized in the period, cameo jewelry was popular in the Roman Empire (which originated during the times of Ancient Egypt).

Blackamoor jewelry was based off of the Black Muslim Moorish people from North Africa who were integral part to the Renaissance period. Because of their influence in mathematics, politics, and art during the Middle Ages, Europe was even able to be reborn. The jewelry originated in Venice by a sculptor named Andrea Brustolon and contrary to popular belief, they were not created with racist intentions.

As much as I'm known for over the top looks, I actually kept this one pretty simple with a pair of basic black trousers and pearled accessories. A metallic pair of vintage J. Renee silver and gold flats to top it off.

What I loved most about this shoot was the location. My photographer and I shot at Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry with it's Greco-Roman based architecture which very much gave renaissance era.

Looking forward to creating more post 20th century looks! What's your favorite decade or historical era?
