August 23-August 31, 2005 marks the 12 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which left New Orleans, Lousiana in ruins. The hurricane resulted in one million residents being displaced and $108 billion in damage. Since August 23, 2017, Hurricane Harvey has displaced residents primarily in Houston, Texas leaving residents in panic as floodwaters rose in homes causing people to be trapped and even climbing their roofs in praying to be rescued. By Friday, 50 more inches of rain is to be expected.
As of August 29, the New York Times reports that 30 are dead, 3,500 people have been rescued by the Houston Police Department. Houston mayor Sylvester Turner stated that about 150 people are in "critical" conditions. The Department of Homeland Security and the Texas National Guard have dispatched aid to assist and rescue residents in need. Mayor Turner also ordered a curfew from 10pm to 5am CT to limit looting. So far, 14 people have been arrested according to the Harris County District Attorney's Office.
Businesses in Houston like Gallery Furniture, the Houston Convention Center, and the George R. Brown Convention Cneter opened their doors to allow the U.S. National Guard and Houstonians to seek shelter. There was also controversy aimed at Prosperity preacher Joel Osteen who until today did not agree to open the doors to his megachurch Lakewood Church. Maybe his friend Creflo
People on social media has responded to the devastation by taking up collections for money and supplies to send to the victims in Houston. Organizations, businesses, and regular people are collecting money, food, clothing, medical supplies, and much more to send to Texas. Please be wary of donating to shady companies/people and big corporations like the American Red Cross since they have a history of stealing funds as they did during the 2010 hurricane aftermath in Haiti. Here's a list of reputable places to donate to:
