I've been super thirsty to get all dolled up and hit the town even though it's wintertime. I'm totally embracing having fun in the winter and not hibernating. It's one thing to dress casual, but another to get fancy. I love a good vintage sequined dress, as we know, so when I spotted this vintage 1980's Carmen Marc Valvo sequined dress at a thrift store, I had to grab it.
What's funny is that I have two more blue, vintage 1980's sequined dresses that I've purchased in the past few years, Hopefully I'll come across a pink or purple one on my next vintage shopping adventures to get some variety in my closet. I went to dinner at the Signature Room at 95th in the John Hancock Tower that night. It's a top tier restaurant here in Chicago with a strict dress code, so I took the opportunity to rock this ensemble that night.
Upon choosing the dress, I had to create a fly ensemble. I added a pair of black satin gloves I bought from Claire's, my tennis bracelet, black Chinese Laundry clutch, Juicy Couture raccoon fur collar, and a pair of Oka-B black, rhinestone ballerina "Bella" flats. Oh and a quick note about the flats; got 'em on sale for a whopping $5 at Village Discount Outlet. They're in great condition and super comfortable, might I add. (see why I love thrifting?). I loved the direction the look was going, but something else was missing, so in came the fascinator hat creation.
I've been a fan of fascinator hats for some time now. They're so whimsical, so kawaii, so damn creative and they fit my style perfectly. After watching a few YouTube tutorials, I visited my local JoAnn's craft store, grabbed some supplies, and created my own, personal fascinator. I love how it came out and I love how it looked with the entire ensemble. It gave me a "Great Gatsby" feel meshed with a classic 1980's sequin dress. I think I'll eventually be making these for my art business (shameless plug).
For hair and make-up, I had to go all out. I usually wear my hair in its natural afro state, but this time I decided to wear curls from a flexi-rod set (yup, I'm not putting a lot of heat on this head). And of course I had to go with a dramatic, smokey eye look for the eye make-up and a matte, classic, vintage style for the overall face and lip.
I'm read for more fancy nights out on the town, especially come springtime!

I am in LOVE with this entire look! I love the Great Gatsby and I would've never thought to combine that concept with 80s attire but it TOTALLY works; I'm so impressed! Your makeup is on point too. I'm loving the red lip and brows. I'm definitely subscribing! Thanks for this look!!

DeleteOk, first off, just looking at your other photos... LOVE your hair! That fro is so thick and full! :-) Now, this ensemble, super cute! You definitely could've gone a couple of ways with this dress but you nailed it with the fascinator idea, great touch to give it that 20s (or is it 30s?) glam! And the color pops. Great look!
ReplyDeleteThanks wonderful! I definitely will try new styles with this dress! Maybe more of an "80's look" next. <3
DeleteThat blue is amazing! Looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteI loved your look! Reminded me of Julia Sugarbaker, Joan Collins and every high end female lead character in the 80s. Spot on for continuity of the era but you still made it your own!! So creative!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ally! I always aim to add my own personal style in everything I wear haha!
DeleteOh my gosh you look super classy!!!!
