Product Review: The Lip Bar "Night Owl" Lipstick

I've been wanting to try The Lip Bar's products for the longest! It's been on my "Black Owned Make up Products" to try list and I finally grabbed some during their holiday White Box BOGO sale. I purchased "Crown Me", a deep purple matte lipstick for my bff and the "Night Owl" lipstick for myself.

Despite the holiday postal delays, my package arrived in a week. Even if it arrived late, I still wouldn't have had an issue since I'm understanding of the mailing system as a business owner myself.

First of all, can we please get into the lipstick holder? Freakin' kay-ute! And so unique.

The run down on the lippie:

Size: .24 fl oz

Price: $12

Ingredients: RicinusCommunis (Castor) Seed Oil, PerseaGratissima (Avocado) oil, Caprylic/Capric triglyceride ( derivate of coconut oil), Magnesium Myristate, ButyrospermumParkii (Shea Butter), Kaolin Clay, Stearyl Palmitate, Carnauba Wax, Ozokerite, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Microcrystalline wax, Vanillin, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, [+/-] Mica, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Yellow 5 Lake (CI19140), Red #7 Lake (CI45410, CI15850), Red #40 Lake CI 16035,D&C Red #6 (CI15850), Blue #1 Lake (CI42090), Yellow #6 Lake (CI15985)

Here's the look I created with the Night Owl lippie:

Pros:
  • Pigmented
  • Vegan
  • Long lasting
  • Unique, bold, beautiful packaging
  • Smooth application

Cons:
  • Slight sheer finish

Rocking black lipstick doesn't mean you have to go goth or emo. You can totally dress it up on the glam tip, do a vintage look, or add it with a colorful ensemble.

As for the lipstick, it was pretty decent! Very soft on the lips, moisturizing, and I love the fact it's produced by a Black woman owned company, specially made for darker skin tones. The only reason I didn't give it a five out of five rating is because it's slightly sheer and some of the lipstick started bunching in one part of my lip. Perhaps the lipstick is made that way to have a sheer look and I have a feeling this only happens with this lippie in particular. Nonetheless, I'm so happy I finally got my hands on TLB and I'm ready for my next color (perhaps a matte)!

Rating: 4.5/5

  1. I loved the look you created. You looked fabulous. I have never heard of this brand before you. I love black and other weirder lip colours. You wore it well

  2. Good look. Thanks for letting me know about a product/black owned that I was unaware about. I will be ordering some to try for myself.

  3. I've heard of the Lip Bar, but have never seen a review till now - so thanks for keeping it real with us. I have a few black lippies and have about 5 different purple ones( my favorite color). I love bold colors, especially from black female owned businesses. So I will definitely be checking out the lip bar. By the way I am loving the entire look you gave us. Go head girl!!

  5. I have been hearing A LOT about Lip Bar but haven't tried it yet! This review helped bump it a lot higher on the list. Black lipstick is a lot of fun, I don't wear it much out, but I do for photoshoots and creative things! Thanks so much for putting this together!

  8. The lip color is both bold and daring. I think it looks good on you, but dark lipstick ages people of other races so it’s hard for others to pull off.

  9. One of the things I love about The Lip Bar besides being black owned is their packaging. I only have one of their lip paints, but I do like it. It is called Boy Trouble.

  10. I'm going to have to venture out of my comfort zone and try this. I've never looked good with black lipstick, but that was years ago when I tried it. I'm going to have to try it again. Thanks for this post.
